MEHMET E. YAYA – EMU-AAUP Executive Committee Member-at-Large
MEHMET E. YAYA – Candidate for EMU-AAUP Executive Committee Member-at-Large
Associate Professor, Department of Economics
I am seeking my second term as Executive Committee Member-at-Large. During my first term, I have provided service to our members by responding to their questions on our role or was involved with research activities within our chapter. I have represented the AAUP-EMU at the Board of Regents meetings, grievance hearings, Faculty Senate, and Michigan-AAUP State Conference meetings locally, also at the AAUP National Meetings as a council member of the Michigan District. In December 2013, I have worked on a research on the factors influencing the student retention and tied the issue to strong faculty base at my presentation at the Faculty Affairs meeting. I have also worked on Right-To-Work legislations in which I compare and contrast the state variations in the implementation of these legislations. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to attend AAUP Summer workshop in which I concentrate on the contract negotiations. In 2012, I was appointed to be the member of the Michigan District of the AAUP National Council and in 2013 I was elected to this position for two years. At the national level, I was involved with issues related to faculty co-governance and membership drives. Finally, I was part of the ad-hoc committee on hiring a Senior Higher Education Researcher position of the AAUP national office. If elected, I will keep serving our members at the local and national level by reminding our members the importance of our union and uniting them with one purpose: protecting rights of labor.
